SECTION 1 - General Notes
System Requirements
-------------------
The system requirements to use this CD-ROM with the
student version of ME10 for Windows rev. 08.50:
* A 486-33 MHz-based (or faster) PC with at least 8 MB of
RAM
* ME10 requires 11-14 MB of disk space. A minimum of 20
MB free disk space is required during the installation
process
* A permanently installed CD-ROM drive
* Windows-compatible mouse with appropriate driver
software
* A color monitor with a minimum resolution of 640x480
pixels
* MS-Windows 3.1 (or higher) or
MS-Windows for Workgroups 3.1 (or higher)
Windows 95 or
MS-Windows NT 3.1 (or higher)

SECTION 3 - Getting started with ME10
How to get ME10 started
-----------------------
The CD-ROM with the student version of ME10 for Windows
is very easy to use:
* Plug the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive
* Go to the Windows' File Manager
* Click on your CD-ROM icon (E: or D:)
* Double click SETUP.EXE
* Select your required language
* Then follow the instructions on the screen
What is the User Interface?
---------------------------
Per default, the screen-only version of ME10 has a user
interface that is split into
* a command pad column on the right that offers access to
command blocks and screen menus with interrupt
functions as well as to general commands like "DELETE"
or "HELP".
Each command block activates one or more screen menus
containing the commands necessary for the task chosen.
Menus 1 or 2 can be activated from the command pad
itself.
The interrupt functions cover frequently needed
operations, such as zooming in on your drawing and
changing linetype. These functions can be used at any
time without terminating the active command.
All the necessary construction geometry commands are
also available via command
* 2 blocks of screen menus (one right top and one right
bottom)
* a drawing area and an area at the bottom of the screen
The area at the bottom of the screen consists of the
System Status Line, the System Prompt Line, and the User
Input Line:
* System Status Line - provides information on the
current state of ME10
* System Prompt Line - displays messages to guide you
through the commands
* User Input Line - displays the data you enter via the
keyboard
The System Status Line looks like:

construction geometry:

Note:
Uppercase characters are displayed for ON and
lowercase for OFF.
(5) Current point type (graphics)
(6) Current line and color type (graphics)
(7) Current SPLITTING mode:

Note:
Uppercase character 'S' is displayed for ON and
lowercase character 's' is displayed for OFF.
(8) Current layer (number)
(9) Current catch mode. Possible values are:
o off
o pnt
o elem
o intr
o all
o cntr
o grid
(10) Current drawing scale (number)
(11) Current angle units. Possible values are:
o deg
o grd
o rad
(12) Current grid spacing (number)
(13) Current distance units. Possible values are:
o mm

(14) Default Z-value (number)
Note:
This value is optional. It is only part of the
system status line if the 2D Hidden Line module is
enabled.
(15) Part Level (number or 'S')
Note:
If an 'S' is displayed in the part level position
it means that you are working on a shared part.
(16) Active part (string)
Basic working methods
---------------------
It will not take you very long to become familiar with
ME10, but a few hints may help you to get started.
Many operations require similar user interaction. For
example, you will often be prompted to "identify an
element", "enter a value", "enter a filename", or
"indicate a point".
Some of the most commonly used terms and their meaning in
a screen-only version of ME10 are listed below:
Identifying an Element or a Point

This implies that the element or point already exist.
Identify it by:
o Pressing the cursor at the appropriate position
o Entering the coordinates, separated by a comma
Indicating a Point
++++++++++++++++++
This implies that the point chosen could be anywhere on
the drawing and may or may not be marked by an existing
point. Again, the point required is indicated by:
o Pressing the cursor at the appropriate position
o Entering the coordinates, separated by a comma
Entering a Value
++++++++++++++++
Entering a value means entering the value and pressing
. For certain commands and functions you must
enter a numerical value, and for others a string
enclosed in quotes ' ' or " ". Additionally, values to
be entered can be first calculated by typing the
appropriate mathematical expression in parentheses:
(15 * TAN 30)
What are Viewports
------------------
A viewport is a rectangular area on the screen whose
position and size you can define. Specific parts of your
drawing can be displayed in the viewports. This then
enables you to study the drawing or add information with
greater ease and accuracy. You can create up to 16
viewports but usually between 2 and 6 are sufficient.
The viewports are identified by a number in the top right
hand corner. You will notice that one number is in
inverse video - this is the current viewport. By
default, all windowing functions operate on the current
viewport. Any viewport can be made current by either
selecting the identification number on the screen or by
selecting the "Current" function in the "VIEWPORT" screen
menu with the mouse.
Positioning menus
-----------------
Menus can be repositioned anywhere around the screen so
that you can display several menus at a time. The menus
can be overlapped and closed as needed for your current
work.
Additionally, menus can be "pinned" at a certain
position. Pinned menus always open at the position where
they were pinned.
How to Delete Elements
----------------------
As you learn with the system you are sure to make
mistakes. To delete an element or piece of text,
1. Select the DELETE pad with the mouse
2. Identify the element or text to be deleted.
If you make a mistake during identification you can
restore the element or text by selecting the UNDO pad
with the mouse.
How to Store a Workfile
-----------------------
To prevent loss of your drawing (due to power failure,
for example) you should store a workfile regularly (every
10 to 15 minutes is recommended).
To store your workfile:
1. Select "FILE 1" pad with your mouse.
2. Select "All" in "STORE MI".
3. Select "'workfile'" in "STORE MI".
This command stores a file called 'workfile' in your current
directory and overwrites the last 'workfile'.
How to enable DIMENSION ADVISOR / PARAMETRIC DESIGN
---------------------------------------------------
By default, DIMENSION ADVISOR that significantly improves
the overall speed and efficiency of the dimensioning
process as well as PARAMETRIC DESIGN that adds parametric
modeling and constraint based capabilities to ME10 are
disabled when starting ME10.
DIMENSION ADVISOR and PARAMETRIC DESIGN can be enabled
via the ME10 "SETUP" menu by just selecting the
"DIMADVISOR" / "PARAMETRIC" pad with the mouse.
Getting On-line Help
--------------------
The help file contains technical reference information
about all the commands and functions that you can use
within ME10.
To use the help system:
1. Select "HELP" pad with the mouse.
2. Input the command or function on which you require
help by either:
a. Selecting a command or function from the screen
menus with the mouse
b. Entering the command or function name.
ME10 responds by displaying the required help
information.
3. Press to return to the normal display.

SECTION 4 - ME10 Macro Language
A macro is a quick and easy method of executing a
sequence of commands automatically. Little or no user
input is required.
Why Use a Macro?
----------------
ME10 offers a macro language for customization of the
system to your needs (for example, automatic selection of
customer specific settings), for implementation of short
cuts for frequently used command sequences and for
extending the functionality of the system with add-on
commands.
Some major applications for macros are as follows:
* Creating geometry
* Making calculations
* Labeling drawings
* Creating parts list
* Controlling screen menu display and function
For example, at least once a day you log out from ME10.
Before you log out you store your drawing and then type
EXIT CONFIRM on the command line. Or you select the
"EXIT" and the "CONFIRM" pad from the screen with the
mouse.
You can automate this procedure using the following
macro, called "Quit":

Goodies
-------
The goodies are a set of macros that are part of every
release. Those macros show examples for different areas
how to enhance the standard functionality by creation of
new, macro-based commands.
The goodies are accessible from the standard user
interface (FILE 2 menu).
Macro Basics
------------
A macro can consist of six sections as follows:
* DEFINE
* Parameters
* Local Variables
* User Input
* Macro Body
* END_DEFINE
A macro need not contain all of these sections.
Control statements are used to alter the way a macro
executes. The ME10 macro language offers control
statements as follows:
* WHILE ... END_WHILE
* LOOP ... EXIT_IF ... END_LOOP
* REPEAT ... UNTIL
* IF ... ELSE_IF ... ELSE ... END_IF

SECTION 5 - User Interface
ME10 for Windows rev. 08.50 supports a 3D appearance on all
graphics cards with 256 colors.
You can configure this during installation (3D appearance),
or set the 'MEPELOOK' environment variable to '1', or use
the command line options.

SECTION 6 - MS-Windows Command line Configuration
ME10 for Windows rev. 08.50 supports configuration both
through environment variables and through MS-Windows command
line options. If both are performed, the command line
options will be used.
The command line may be issued from the RUN command of
Program Manager or File Manager. However, it is most often
set as the properties for the ME10 program item.
Since command line options does not require rebooting the
system, it allows the user to configure rapidly. It also
allows many different configurations of ME10 to coexist as
separate program items. For example, if there are several
users of ME10 on one system, there can be one program item
customized for each user.
The format typically is "ME10F [option]". Some options
require an argument. If the argument contains spaces, it
should be enclosed with double quotes.
These command line options are supported, the explanation
follows each option.

For example, to run ME10 with 3D appearance with a font
called "Courier", the command line will look like:

Note: If MS-Windows is started from AUTOEXEC.BAT

If MS-Windows is started from AUTOEXEC.BAT, after the
installation, please check AUTOEXEC.BAT to make sure that
the line to start Windows comes after the ME environment
variables.

SECTION 7 - MS-Windows Hints
* MS-Windows Fonts
o ME10 uses the fonts supplied by MS-Windows. To check
which fonts are available and to examine the
appearance, one can use the Fonts option of the
Control Panel in MS-Windows. Additional fonts may be
found in Character Map in the Accessories program
group. Note that only fixed pitch fonts will work
well with ME10.
o ME10 supplies three fixed pitch MS-Windows fonts for
Roman alphabets in the WINFONTS directory where ME10
is installed. They may be added to the system with
the Fonts option of the Control Panel and
subsequently used by ME10.
* Drivers
o In general it is best to obtain the supported drivers
for all the peripherals used by ME10. This applies
to the graphics card, the mouse, the printer, and the
plotter. They are usually available from the
manufacturer and computer bulletin boards.
* Redraw when ME10 exposed
o Occasionally ME10 does not repaint itself when it is
exposed. Simply use the NEW_SCREEN function for
repainting.
* Screen Saver
o The MS-Windows screen saver interferes with message
handling in ME10 and will cause the "RUN" command to
wait. So if it is necessary to run through a large
macro file while the system is not being used, it is
best to turn the screen saver off. The monitor may
be turned off if desired.
* Loading compressed MI files
Loading a compressed MI file in ME10 running under
Windows requires use of command.com and MS-DOS.
MS-DOS has a command line limit of 128 bytes.
Approximately 70 bytes are used for the command
itself. This means that the MI filename (including
path) cannot be longer than 58 bytes. The use of
CURRENT_DIRECTORY may reduce the amount of required
bytes for the path.
Under Windows NT, there is no such limitation.

SECTION 8 - Hints for Connection to Serial Ports
If your PC has a bus mouse or a HIL connected mouse, you
cannot connect the serial tablet to the serial port COM2.
In this case, connect the serial tablet to COM1.

SECTION 9 - Configuring Plotting
ME10 for Windows rev. 08.50 supports plotting through the
Print Manager. Thus any graphics printer or plotter that
has a driver under MS-Windows can be used for plotting. Any
customization of the plotter is possible through the driver
supplied with your plotter (see Print Manager under the Main
Program Group or the Control Panel Group). If plot files
are desired, one can simply "connect" the plotter to FILE:.
As a result, no PLOT CONFIG is required anymore.
Plot Defaults
-------------
There are several ME10-specific parameters that must be
defined. You can define most of these parameters when you
are ready to plot. If you do not, ME10 uses the plot
defaults contained in the defaults.mac file.
A list of the plot defaults section from the defaults.mac
file is shown below. The next section "Plot Default
Parameters" explains the parameters in detail.

Plot Default Parameters
-----------------------
You can change the plot defaults by editing the defaults
file. This section describes the plot defaults you are most
likely to edit.
Set_sys_plot_plotscale
Purpose: Defines the plot scale to be used if SCALE (in the
PLOT screen menu) has not been set before plotting.
Default: 1
Use an integer, such as 1, 2, or 3. The setting 0 means fit
the drawing onto the plotter paper.
Set_sys_plot_source
Purpose: Specifies how much of the drawing is plotted: sets
ALL, CURRENT_WINDOW or TWO_PTS for PLOT.
Default: ALL
Use All (plots the entire drawing), Viewport (plots the part
of drawing visible in the current window), or Box (plots all
elements within a box defined by two points). The current
setting will be highlighted in the OUTPUT option of the PLOT
menu.
Set_sys_plot_as_displayed
Purpose: Determines whether the AS_DISPLAYED option will be
used in the plot.
Default: (FALSE)
The highlight for Drawing or Curr Show indicates the current
settings of the CONTENTS option in the PLOT menu.
If you use (TRUE), the model is plotted as it is displayed
in the current viewport, with construction geometry,
spotlighting, vertex points, and part boxes. If you use
(FALSE), the model is plotted as a normal drawing. Geometry
and dimensioning are included. Vertex points, spotlighting,
shown changes, part boxes, and construction geometry are
suppressed.
Set_sys_plot_rot
Purpose: Sets the rotation angle for PLOT in radian angular
units.
Default: 0
Use a value from 0 to 360. The current value is displayed
in current angular units to the right of ROTATE ANG in the
PLOT menu.
Plot_black_and_white
Purpose: Set a plot transformation for black-and-white
drawings. (see PLOT_TRANSFORM in the help system)
Plot_black_and_white should be customized to obtain
the desirable line thickness corresponding to each
pen.
Default: None
Dump_option_direct
Purpose: Set a flag to generate a screen dump with the same
colors as the screen. The alternative is to
reverse the colors.
Default: None
Destination_print_mgr
Purpose: Set the destination of plot and screen dump to the
Print Manager. The alternative is to send to the
Clipboard.
Default: None
Print_mgr_option_on
Purpose: Pop up the Print Manager dialog for choosing and
configuring a plotter. Otherwise the default
plotter with default settings is used.
Default: None

ABSCHNITT 3 - Erste Schritte mit ME10
So starten Sie ME10
-----------------------
Die CD-ROM mit der Studentenversion von ME10 für Windows
ist sehr einfach zu bedienen:
* Stecken Sie die CD-ROM in Ihr CD-ROM-Laufwerk
* Gehen Sie zum Windows-Datei-Manager
* Klicken Sie auf das CD-ROM-Symbol (E: oder D :)
* Doppelklicken Sie auf SETUP.EXE
* Wählen Sie Ihre gewünschte Sprache
* Folgen Sie dann den Anweisungen auf dem Bildschirm
Was ist die Benutzeroberfläche?---------------------------
Standardmäßig hat die Nur-Bildschirm-Version von ME10 einen Benutzer
Schnittstelle, in die aufgeteilt wird
* Eine Befehlszeilenspalte rechts, auf die zugegriffen werden kann
Befehlsblöcke und Bildschirmmenüs mit Interrupt
funktioniert genauso wie zu allgemeinen Befehlen wie "DELETE"
oder "HILFE". Jeder Befehlsblock aktiviert ein oder mehrere Bildschirmmenüs
mit den Befehlen, die für die gewählte Aufgabe erforderlich sind. Die Menüs 1 oder 2 können über das Command Pad aktiviert werden
selbst. Die Interrupt-Funktionen decken häufig benötigte Funktionen ab
Operationen, wie das Vergrößern Ihrer Zeichnung und
Linientyp ändern. Diese Funktionen können jederzeit verwendet werden
Zeit ohne Beenden des aktiven Befehls.Alle notwendigen Konstruktionsgeometriebefehle sind
auch per befehl verfügbar
